Century dictionary on-line

Century dictionary on-line. This is an interesting project: putting a public domain (copyright expired) dictionary on-line. Too bad it’s an exercise in showing the capabilities of a looser image compression technology DjVu (looser because it’s too little too late) and not an exercise in making really good on-line dictionary.

And a copyright side-note. The site has the following copyright statement: “CGI software, user interface, and images are © copyright 2001 Global Language Resources, Inc.”. My question is: how can they copyright “images” given that they’re merely a scanned version of a book in public domain?

Treo 600 devleper kit available.

Treo 600 devleper kit available. Treo 600 developer kit has been released. The only really sucky thing about new Treo 600 is its lousy screen resolution (160×160 simply doesn’t look good) but Handspring does the right thing by releasing developer information. Wireless application downloads is intriguing - that’s clearly the future but we’ll have to see how it’ll evolve (there’s a danger of monopolizing distribution channels by device maker/mobile service provider and that would be bad).

Hydra 1.1 released.

Hydra 1.1 released. New version of Hydra (a collaborative text editor for Mac) has been released, includes live HTML preview powered by Safari. Which shows that including powerful capabilities in the base OS is important. By making WebKit Apple enalbed Hydra folks do things that they couldn’t do otherwise. Apple wins, programmers wins, users wins.

Should I stay in software business.

Should I stay in software business. This seems to be a recurring topic in Joel On Software forums: someone asks “IT doesn’t look good. Should I stick being a programmer or switch to being a doctor/lawyer/whatever”. This should be a definitive answer.

Memex - “sue me please” device

Memex - “sue me please” device.
Consider this quote from As we may think:

A memex is a device in which an individual stores all his books, records, and communications, and which is mechanized so that it may be consulted with exceeding speed and flexibility.

Is it just me or does that sound like something RIAA/MPAA/EvilBookPublisher wouldn’t like you to do (to the point of suing you if you did)? Does that sound like excessive copyrights stand in the way of progress?
